174 armed robbers arrested by FCT security agencies

armed robberyThe FCT security agencies arrested 174 armed robbers in the territory between April and September 2013.This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Muhammad Sule, Chief Press Secretary to the FCT Minister, on Tuesday in Abuja.

It said the FCT Commissionerof Police, Mr Femi Ogunbayode, disclosed during a high-point discussion at the FCT Security Committee meeting chaired by FCT Minister, Sen. Bala Mohammed. It said that 604 rounds of live ammunition were recovered during the period.
“The number of arms recovered include 27 locally-made pistols, three AK-47 riffles, one Lar-Riffle, 11 Wooden/Toy Guns and one JoeJeff Pump Action Gun,” it said.
It said that Ogunbayode also disclosed that a total of 61 stolen vehicles were recovered in the FCT during the period under review. The statement also said that 32 armed robbery cases had been charged to court, adding that only one case of abduction was reported during the period. It added that through intelligence, about 10 criminal hideouts had been identified, while 940 suspects were arrested during a regular raid and 283 prosecuted. However, it warned that owners of all uncompleted buildings in the territory would be held responsible if miscreants were traced to the locations.
“Members of the public are enjoined to be vigilant at all times particularly as we enter the ember months and report suspicious activities to the law enforcement agents,” it added.
The unfinished building where security forces killed at least seven squatters Friday, September 20, in the Apo neighbourhood of Abuja, belongs to Mrs. Adunni Oluwole Salisu, believed to be the sister to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, a PREMIUM TIMES investigation has revealed.
Documents from the Abuja Geographical Information Systems (AGIS) shows that the property, located at No. 8 Bamanga Tukur Street, Gudu District, near the Gudu cemetery, belongs to Mrs. Salisu. Ownership details of property OG247326, point unmistakably to Mrs. Salisu’s land rights, but neither her, nor the former president, could be reached for comment; although authoritative family sources confirmed the ownership and the relationship.
The Gudu killings have pitched the Nigerian human rights community against anti-terrorist campaigners in a bitter debate about the threshold of caution that security forces on anti-terror missions ought to uphold where the insurgency is generally armed, and have demonstrated maximum capability for ruthless murder and violence.
Soldiers and SSS officials, spurred by intelligence reports that a sleeper cell of Boko Haram insurgents, embedded in the Gudu neighbourhood, were about to strike again in Abuja, pre-emtorily stormed the building inhabited by squatters, mostly tricycles drivers, petty traders and artisans, in the early hours of Friday, killing at least seven and leaving several injured.
A spokesman for the tricycle association angrily lambasted security officials on Channels TV, in an interview Monday, claiming that “because two or three Boko Haram people were in the building offers no excuse to kill innocent people.”
Security forces have been in anxious alert after the Boko Haram insurgents scored a string of deadly success in missions that targeted This Day newspaper office, the United Nations office, the Force Headquarters of the Nigeria Police, and the Anti-Robbery Squad headquarters of the Police- all in Abuja. The sect has also visited punishing attacks on neighbourhood churches killing scores of worshipers.
Sources gathered, within intelligence sources, Tuesday, that a mood of panic alert in the security community was what precipitated the Apo killings also thought to be “quite frankly an operational failure,” underscoring, top operatives disclosed to PREMIUM TIMES, “the imperative for deeper and specialized human rights training for agents on anti-insurgency mission.”
Residents claim a representative of the owner of the house had given the squatters a week notice to vacate the property. The squatters were killed before the expiration of the notice.
Most of the dead and wounded were shot in the back, execution style. It is not known yet whether Mr. Obasanjo played any role in that tragic eviction operation. Meanwhile, multiple security sources have told this paper that the SSS had released most of the squatters arrested at the building after it was unable to link them to any terrorist activities.
News of the release of the squatters came just as the Nigerian Senate, the Police and the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, promised to investigate the killings. Chairman of the NHRC, Chidi Odinkalu, told PREMIUM TIMES it was essential to investigate and verify the death of the squatters.
“The facts of this matter should be dispassionately verified,” Mr. Odinkalu said. “That is an obligation everybody must take seriously.”

case of rape or careless lovers? Okada man, housewife caught making love in bush

OWERRI—A mild drama played out in Orlu, ImoState, when a commercial motorcyclist, a father of two (names withheld), was caught pants down making love to a married woman in a lonely bush.

While the 45-year-old housewife was making a case of rape against the randy motorcyclist, the 30-year-old man insisted that the woman was his concubine.
Giving account of what transpired to the police, the woman said she engaged the motorcyclist at Orlu to take her to her matrimonial home at Obibi-Ochasi.
She said when they got to a solitary area along the route, the man stopped ostensibly to ease himself.
She further told the police that while she was waiting for him to finish easing himself, the man emerged and started asking that they sleep together, adding that when she refused the amorous advance, the man grabbed her and forcefully lifted her into the bush.
The woman equally claimed that the rapist tore her inner wears to shreds, over-powered and raped her.
In his defence, the man claimed that the woman had been his concubine for years, adding that he had previously had fun with her at different times and places, including the spot where they were caught in the act.
He also claimed that he called the woman on her mobile line and asked her to meet him at the agreed spot in Orlu.
The man also claimed that when they got to the bush, the woman stripped herself naked, spread her wrapper on the ground and laid down before he started the act.
The randy motorcyclist, however, agreed that along the line there was a minor misunderstanding on the amount he should pay after they had satisfied themselves.
While the man claimed that the woman was asking for N500 for the service, he offered N200, which he said was the only money on him at the time.
Vanguard equally gathered that plan was in top gear to arraign the alleged rapist in court to face trial.

Pakistan earthquake: Hundreds dead in Balochistan

A powerful earthquake has killed at least 250 people in Pakistan's remote south-west province of Balochistan.

Rubble of a house in Awaran, Balochistan, on 25 September 2013
Entire villages in the Balochistan district of Awaran are reported to have been flattened in the 7.7 earthquake
The 7.7-magnitude quake struck on Tuesday afternoon at a depth of 20km (13 miles) north-east of Awaran, the US Geological Survey said.
Many houses were flattened and thousands of people have spent the night in the open.
After the quake, a small island appeared off the coast near the port of Gwadar, witnesses reported.
People gathered on the beach to see the new island, which is about 9m (30ft) high and 100m long, Gwadar Police Chief Pervez Umrani said.
Balochistan is Pakistan's largest but least populated province.
The region is prone to earthquakes, with at least 35 people killed in a 7.8-magnitude tremor that was centred in south-eastern Iran in April.

Most of the homes in the area are made from mud brick and easily collapsed when the tremors struck on Tuesday.
 Mud houses
The latest quake was so powerful it was felt as far away as Karachi, Hyderabad, and India's capital, Delhi. Entire villages are reported to have been flattened in the impoverished and sparsely-populated district of Awaran.

Balochistan government spokesman Jan Buledi said most of the fatalities were in Awaran town and the surrounding villages, and he warned that the death toll could rise. At least 340 people have been injured.
"We are seriously lacking medical facilities and there is no space to treat injured people in the local hospitals," Mr Buledi said.
He said helicopters were airlifting the most seriously injured to Karachi while others were being cared for in neighbouring districts.
Pakistan's military was among the first to respond to the crisis, having a heavy presence in the area already because it is fighting a long-running separatist Baloch insurgency.
The army said it had sent more than 200 soldiers, medical teams and tents from the regional capital Quetta, but the mountainous terrain is said to be hampering the rescue operation.

Nairobi attack: Kenya forces comb Westgate site

Kenyan forces are securing the Nairobi shopping centre attacked by suspected al-Shabab militants, as the stand-off enters its fourth day.
A senior police source said early on Tuesday the operation was "over", however journalists at the scene have reported sporadic gunfire at the mall.
There has been no official confirmation the siege is over. Kenya's president is expected to make a statement shortly.
At least 65 people have been killed, including three soldiers.
The Kenyan Red Cross says 51 people are still missing, and the BBC's Gabriel Gatehouse says mortuaries in the capital are expecting to receive more bodies.
There are reports that part of the roof at the Westgate shopping centre has collapsed, following a fierce blaze on Monday.

The Somali Islamist al-Shabab movement said it had carried out the attack in retaliation for Kenyan military operations in Somalia.

Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon has said that those behind the attacks "must be held accountable."
Meanwhile, Kenya's foreign minister said "two or three" Americans and a British woman were among the attackers.
In an interview with the US TV programme PBS Newshour, Amina Mohamed said the Americans were 18 or 19 years old, of Somali or Arab origin, and lived "in Minnesota and one other place".
She said the Briton was a woman who had
"done this many times before".
Ms Mohamed appeared to contradict earlier comments from Kenya's interior minister, who suggested that all the attackers were men - though some may have been dressed as women.
Ms Mohamed's remarks have fuelled media speculation about the possible involvement of Samantha Lewthwaite, the widow of one of the men who carried out attacks on London's transport system on 7 July 2005.
British officials said they would not be drawn on the identity of the attackers while investigations continued.
Mosque leaders in Minnesota have condemned the violence, saying the attacks had nothing to do with Islam.

Is it over? Khloe Kardashian tellingly dropped her husband Lamar Odom's surname from her Instagram account on Monday

Where Khloe Kardashian stands with her troubled marriage to Lamar Odom appears to be changing not just by the day but by the hour.
Monday morning saw the star tellingly drop her basketballer husband's surname from her Instagram account, now simply going by her maiden name on the social networking site.
But later that same evening, the 29-year-old was spotted heading to dinner at a steakhouse in Topanga Canyon, California, wearing her wedding ring.

Showing off her newly slim frame, Khloe sported white denim trousers and a low-buttoned black shirt as she wore her ombre tresses in flowing waves over her shoulders.
Adorning her ears were large gold hoop earrings as she accented her features with smoky eye make-up.

The mixed signals on Monday follow reports that her marriage is on rocky ground due to the NBA player's alleged drug abuse.
Lamar hasn't been seen for several days and is reported to be holed up in his downtown LA residence, which is a 45 minute drive from the mansion he shared with Khloe in Tarazana.
Last week there were several reports that a split will be announced soon, but no announcements have been made yet.

"you are a bad man" 4 year old Elliot Prior confronts one of the gunmen

Amazing courage: Four-year-old Elliot Prior and his sister Amelie hold Mars bars next to a dead body outside the Westgate shopping centre in Nairobi after being given the chocolate by a gunman who spared their lives
A four-year-old British boy caught up in the Kenya mall massacre showed astonishing bravery by confronting a marauding gunman who ended up begging for his forgiveness, it emerged today.
Elliot Prior, from Windsor, Berkshire, told one of the terrorists that he was a 'very bad man' as he protected his mother, Amber, who had been shot in the leg, and six-year-old sister Amelie.
Incredibly, the attacker took pity on the family and bizarrely handed the children Mars bars before telling them: 'Please forgive me, we are not monsters.'
His story emerged as sporadic gunfire continued to ring out from inside the mall early today as Kenyan security forces battled Al Qaeda-linked terrorists into a fourth day.
Horror: Their mother, Amber, walks past the body of a man as they escape the Westgate shopping centreLucky escape: Amber hid under a cold meat counter in the Nakumatt supermarket for an hour-and-a-half with her children beneath her before terrorists finally found them and shot her in the thigh
Despite Kenyan police assurances that they had taken control of the building, a security expert with contacts inside the mall said at least 10 hostages were still being held by a band of attackers, possibly as many as 13.
Kenya's foreign minister Amina Mohamed said 'two or three' Americans and one British woman were among those who attacked the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi.

After discovering the advertising producer was of French origin, the men began to plead with her and claimed that the Muslim faith ‘was not a bad one’.
‘He told me I had to change my religion to Islam and said “do you forgive us? Do you forgive us?’, the mother told The Independent.
‘Naturally, I was going to say whatever they wanted and they let us go’.
Bizarrely, the terrorists handed the children Mars bars before they fled with two other children, including a 12-year-old boy who had at first refused to leave his dead mother.
The fate of 20 others who had taken refuge under the meat counter is unknown.
The family’s escape is particularly astonishing in light of the indiscriminate slaughter of men, women and children throughout the mall after Al Shabaab launched their assault on Saturday.

Has British 'White Widow' Samantha Lewthwaite, suspected to be the leader of the Islamic terrorists that attacked Westgate mall in Nairobi, Kenya on Saturday September 21st, been killed?

It was claimed yesterday that the terror attack in Kenya was being led by Samantha, the widow of one of the 7/7 bombers, Jermaine Lindsay, who with 3 others killed 52 people in a series of co-ordinated suicide attacks in London using the public transport system during the morning rush hour in 2005.

Soldiers said a white woman wearing a veil was shouting orders to gunmen in Arabic during the bloody massacre inside the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi on Saturday.

Samantha may have been killed today as a dead white woman was found among Islamic terrorists killed by soldiers as they stormed the mall this evening. Kenyan authorities haven't confirmed that the woman is really Samantha. Her name was first linked to the attack after Al Shabaab praised her on their Twitter account for leading the attack at Westgate mall.

Moments after the news of Samantha's demise broke, Al Shabaab, took to Twitter to claim that she's safe. Eleven soldiers were also wounded in the fight with the terrorists this evening. Kenyan police said that more than 200 civilians were rescued as troops took control of all the floors of the mall.
